Troubleshoot a Computer That Won't Start

Try these steps when pressing the power button does nothing.

Check the Basics First

1. Is it plugged in? Check the power cable at both ends (wall and computer)
2. Is the outlet working? Try plugging in something else like a phone charger
3. Is the power strip on? Make sure it's switched on and not tripped
4. Laptop: Is the battery charged? Try with the charger connected

For Desktop Computers

1. Check the power switch on the back of the power supply (should be "I" or "On")
2. Try a different power outlet
3. Check that all cables are securely connected
4. Look for any lights on the motherboard (visible through case vents)

For Laptops

1. Connect the charger and wait 15 minutes (battery may be completely dead)
2. Look for charging light indicator
3. Try a different outlet with the charger
4. If available, try a different charger
5. Press and hold power button for 15 seconds, then try turning on

If Lights Come On But No Display

• Check monitor is turned on and connected
• Try a different cable or port
• Press a key or move the mouse (display may be sleeping)
• Connect to an external monitor to test

After Power Outage

1. Wait 30 seconds after power returns
2. Check surge protector - it may have tripped
3. Reset the surge protector if needed
4. Try turning on the computer

When to Contact IT

Contact our helpdesk if:

• You hear unusual sounds (clicking, beeping)
• You smell burning or see smoke
• The computer turns on but immediately shuts off
• None of the above steps help
