Create Passwords That Protect Your Accounts
Strong passwords are your first line of defense against hackers.
What Makes a Strong Password?
- Length - At least 12 characters (longer is better)
- Complexity - Mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
- Uniqueness - Different password for each account
- Unpredictability - Avoid personal info, common words, or patterns
Bad Password Examples
- password123
- John1985 (name + birth year)
- qwerty or 123456
- CompanyName2024
- P@ssw0rd (common substitutions)
Good Password Strategies
Passphrase Method (Recommended)
String together random words with numbers and symbols:
- Blue!Tiger7Lamp$Rain
- Coffee#Mountain42Desk
Sentence Method
Take the first letter of each word in a memorable sentence:
- "My dog Max turns 5 years old in June!" → MdMt5yoiJ!
Password Management Tips
- Never share your password with anyone
- Don't write passwords on sticky notes near your computer
- Consider using a password manager (ask IT for approved options)
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) when available
- Change passwords immediately if you suspect compromise
