Why Restarting Matters
Many computer issues can be resolved with a proper restart. This clears temporary files, resets system processes, and applies pending updates.
How to Restart Windows
- Save any open documents or work
- Click the Start button (Windows icon in the bottom left)
- Click the Power icon
- Select Restart
- Wait for your computer to fully shut down and restart
Alternative Method (Keyboard Shortcut)
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete
- Click the Power icon in the bottom right
- Select Restart
Restart vs. Shut Down
- Restart: Fully clears memory and reloads Windows - best for fixing issues
- Shut Down: On Windows 10/11, uses "Fast Startup" which doesn't fully clear memory
- Tip: If "Shut Down" doesn't fix an issue, try "Restart" instead
When to Restart
- Computer running slowly
- Programs freezing or not responding
- After installing software updates
- When prompted by Windows Update
- At least once a week for best performance
If Your Computer Won't Restart
If the screen is frozen and nothing responds:
- Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
- Wait 30 seconds after it shuts off
- Press the power button to turn it back on
