Get Your Camera and Microphone Working

Fix common audio and video issues for Teams, Zoom, and other video calls.

Camera Not Working

  1. Check privacy shutter - Many laptops have a physical slider covering the camera
  2. Check app permissions:
    1. Press Windows + I to open Settings
    2. Go to Privacy & security > Camera
    3. Make sure camera access is On
    4. Enable access for the app you're using
  3. Close other apps - Only one app can use the camera at a time
  4. Restart the video app
  5. Restart your computer

Microphone Not Working

  1. Check you're not muted - Look for the mute button in your video app
  2. Check the correct microphone is selected:
    • In Teams/Zoom, go to Settings > Audio
    • Select the correct microphone from the dropdown
  3. Check system settings:
    1. Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray
    2. Select Sound settings
    3. Under Input, select the correct microphone
    4. Speak and watch the volume bar to confirm it's picking up sound
  4. Check app permissions:
    1. Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
    2. Ensure microphone access is enabled
