Get Your Camera and Microphone Working
Fix common audio and video issues for Teams, Zoom, and other video calls.
Camera Not Working
- Check privacy shutter - Many laptops have a physical slider covering the camera
- Check app permissions:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings
- Go to Privacy & security > Camera
- Make sure camera access is On
- Enable access for the app you're using
- Close other apps - Only one app can use the camera at a time
- Restart the video app
- Restart your computer
Microphone Not Working
- Check you're not muted - Look for the mute button in your video app
- Check the correct microphone is selected:
- In Teams/Zoom, go to Settings > Audio
- Select the correct microphone from the dropdown
- Check system settings:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray
- Select Sound settings
- Under Input, select the correct microphone
- Speak and watch the volume bar to confirm it's picking up sound
- Check app permissions:
- Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
- Ensure microphone access is enabled
Others Can't Hear Me Clearly
- Use a headset instead of built-in microphone
- Reduce background noise in your environment
- Don't cover the microphone with your hand
- Position headset microphone near (not touching) your mouth
Audio Echo or Feedback
- Use headphones to prevent speaker audio from being picked up by mic
- Mute yourself when not speaking
- Reduce speaker volume
- If using external speakers, move them away from your microphone
Test Before Your Meeting
- Teams: Settings > Devices > Make a test call
- Zoom: Settings > Audio > Test Speaker/Microphone
