What to Do When an Application Freezes

Applications sometimes stop responding. Here's how to handle it.

Step 1: Wait a Moment

Sometimes applications are just processing. Give it 30 seconds before taking action.

Step 2: Force Close with Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  2. Find the frozen application in the list
  3. Click on it to select it
  4. Click End task button (bottom right)
  5. Wait a few seconds for it to close

Alternative: Force Close Shortcut

  1. Press Alt + F4 while the frozen window is selected
  2. If prompted, choose to end the program

After Closing

Prevent Future Freezes

If Your Entire Computer Freezes

  1. Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete
  2. If that works, click Task Manager and end the problem app
  3. If nothing responds, hold the power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown
  4. Wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on
