What to Do When an Application Freezes
Applications sometimes stop responding. Here's how to handle it.
Step 1: Wait a Moment
Sometimes applications are just processing. Give it 30 seconds before taking action.
Step 2: Force Close with Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Find the frozen application in the list
- Click on it to select it
- Click End task button (bottom right)
- Wait a few seconds for it to close
Alternative: Force Close Shortcut
- Press Alt + F4 while the frozen window is selected
- If prompted, choose to end the program
After Closing
- Wait 10 seconds before reopening the application
- If the app saves automatically, check for recovered files when you reopen
- Consider saving work more frequently
Prevent Future Freezes
- Keep applications updated
- Don't run too many programs at once
- Restart your computer regularly
- Clear browser cache if browser freezes often
If Your Entire Computer Freezes
- Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete
- If that works, click Task Manager and end the problem app
- If nothing responds, hold the power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown
- Wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on
