Create Passwords That Protect Your Accounts

Strong passwords are your first line of defense against hackers.

What Makes a Strong Password?

  • Length – At least 12 characters (longer is better)
  • Complexity – Mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
  • Uniqueness – Different password for each account
  • Unpredictability – Avoid personal info, common words, or patterns

Bad Password Examples

  • password123
  • John1985 (name + birth year)
  • qwerty or 123456
  • CompanyName2024
  • P@ssw0rd (common substitutions)

Good Password Strategies

Passphrase Method (Recommended)

String together random words with numbers and symbols:

  • Blue!Tiger7Lamp$Rain
  • Coffee#Mountain42Desk

Sentence Method

Take the first letter of each word in a memorable sentence:

  • “My dog Max turns 5 years old in June!” → MdMt5yoiJ!

Password Management Tips

  • Never share your password with anyone
  • Don’t write passwords on sticky notes near your computer
  • Consider using a password manager (ask IT for approved options)
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) when available
  • Change passwords immediately if you suspect compromise

When to Change Your Password

  • If you shared it with someone
  • After a security incident or breach notification
  • If you used it on a shared or public computer
  • When prompted by your company’s security policy
